A Life That Shaped Generations
Mable Claretta Gaskin, affectionately known as Maam or Mama, was born on July 19, 1924, and passed away on March 7, 1996. She spent her entire life in Drax Hall Jump, St. George, Barbados, where she became a cherished and respected figure within her family and community.
Early Life and Family Roots
She was the first child of Goldbourne and Joselyn Lynch and married Levi Gaskin in December 1946. Together, they raised thirteen children-seven daughters and six sons-building a household rooted in love, resilience, and unity.
A Lifetime of Hard Work
Educated at St. Luke's Girls' School, Mama began working at a young age at the Drax Hall Plantation. She dedicated forty-nine years as a field laborer before retiring. Agriculture was more than work to her; it was a source of pride and stability. Through her tireless effort, she ensured her family always had a home and daily access to food.
Faith, Grace, and Personal Joy
Mama was a devoted member of the Drax Hall Pentecostal Church and lived her life firmly grounded in faith. Known for her elegance and love of dressing well, her signature hats became a memorable part of her personal style. Though humble, she traveled beyond Barbados, visiting the United Kingdom in the 1980s and the United States in the 1990s.
A Heart for Family and Community
Quiet, loving, and peaceful, Mama had a deeply selfless heart. She loved her children and grandchildren dearly and always sought the best for them. Her generosity extended throughout the community, where she graciously shared food, clothing, and lodging with those in need. As a true matriarch, she ensured no one went to bed hungry and that her family remained rooted in faith and togetherness.
A Legacy That Endures
She instilled lasting values of hard work, kindness, and unwavering faith in all whose lives she touched. A pillar of strength and inspiration, Mable Gaskin’s legacy lives on through generations. Her kindness, generosity, and steadfast devotion to family, community, and God will continue to inspire for years to come.
