Who Was Mable Gaskin?

Mable Claretta Gaskin was born on July 19th 1924, Maam/Mama as she was called by everyone, died on March 7th, 1996. Mama lived in Drax Hall Jump St. George Barbados, for all her entire life. She was the first child of Goldbourne and Joselyn Lynch. She was married to Levi Gaskin, in Dec 1946, together their union produced 13 living children (7 girls and 6 boys).
Mama was educated at St. Luke’s Girl’s school. She started to work at a very young age at the Drax Hall plantation. There she worked as a field laborer for 49 years before retiring. Mama love to work in agriculture, she was a workaholic who made sure her family had a home and access to food daily. She was a faithful member of Drax Hall Pentecostal church. Mama loved to dress up, wearing a hat was signature style. Mama had a full life, she travelled at least 2 times in her lifetime, she visited the United Kingdom in the 80’s and the USA in the 90’s. Our Maam was quiet, loving and peaceful, with a selfless heart. She loved her family especially her children and grandchildren, she always wanted the best for them. She graciously provided for others in her community whether it be food, clothing or lodging. Maam, was the epitome of a matriarch, her selfless love for her children and grandchildren was demonstrated by her making sure none of them went to bed hungry. She also made sure that we were in the house of the Lord every Sunday and continued to worship and praised God.

She instilled in her family the values of hard work, faith, and kindness. Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched and the love she shared. She was a pillar of strength and a source of inspiration to all who knew her. Her unwavering faith and dedication to her family and community will be remembered forever. She will always be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and steadfast faith. Her legacy of love and selflessness will continue to inspire her family and community for generations to come.
